Capitol Police Officer who responded to insurrection dies while off duty

A Capitol Police Officer who responded to the siege on the Capitol building on Wednesday died while off duty, the U.S. Capitol Police said. 51-year-old Officer Howard Liebengood, who had been with the department since April 2005, died while off duty three days after the riot that saw supporters of President Trump make their way inside the Capitol building as Congress was certifying the results of November’s presidential election.

“We are reeling from the death of Officer Liebengood,” Gus Apapthansiou, the chairman of Libengood’s police union said. “Every Capitol Police Officer puts the security of others before their own safety and Officer Liebengood was an example of the selfless service that is the hallmark of USCP. This is a tragic day.”

The White House lowered its flags to half-staff on Sunday following the death of Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, who died from injuries while responding to the mob on Sunday. One woman, identified as Ashli Babbit was also shot and killed by authorities at the Capitol during the riot. Three others Rosanne Boyland, Benjamin Philip and Kevin Greeson also died due to medical emergencies.

House to consider using 25th Amendment to move to impeachment on Monday

On Sunday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that the House will vote on a resolution Monday, calling on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove President Donald Trump from office. In a letter to her Democratic House colleagues, Pelosi said that the House will on Monday seek to pass the resolution that would call on Pence to convene and mobilize the Cabinet to declare Trump incapable of executing the duties of his office, following his role in an insurrection at the Capitol building on Wednesday by Unanimous Consent. If the measure does not pass by Unanimous Consent, the legislation will be brought up on the House floor the next day, followed by bringing impeachment legislation against Trump.

Republican Sen. Patrick Toomey of Pennsylvania joined Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska in calling for Trump to resign, saying he had “spiraled down into a kind of madness” following the election. “I think the best way for our country … is for the president to resign and go away as soon as possible,” Toomey said on NBC News’ Meet the Press. “I acknowledge that may not be likely, but I think that would be best.” Toomey had previously said he thought Trump’s actions constituted an “impeachable offense” and on Sunday said he should be disqualified from running for office.

Baltimore Ravens beat Tennessee Titans 20-13 in wild-card game

Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens defeated the Tennessee Titans 20-13 in a wild-card win on Sunday at Nissan Stadium in Nashville. It was Jackson’s first win in the NFL playoffs; he was 0-2 in the postseason entering Sunday’s game.

The 24-year-old Jackson, the reigning NFL MVP, completed 17 of 24 passes for 179 yards and one interception, adding 136 yards and one score on the ground. He joined former San Francisco 49ers signal-caller Colin Kaepernick as the only quarterbacks to total at least 100 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown in a playoff game.

Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill was 18 of 26 passing for 165 yards and a touchdown. He also threw a costly interception on the Titans’ final drive after receiver Kalif Raymond slipped while running his route. The slip led to a Marcus Peters interception that sealed the victory for Baltimore.

President Trump releases video statement condemning Capitol riots, acknowledging transition of power

Amid calls for his Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove him from office, President Donald Trump finally spoke out on Thursday, acknowledging that a new administration will take the White House this month. In a video posted to Twitter on Thursday night, Trump said he was “outraged” by the violence in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday as his supporters stormed the Capitol building. In addition, he recognized Congress’ decision to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory, saying, “A new administration will be inaugurated on Jan. 20. My focus now turns to ensuring a smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power.”

However, Trump did remark that he would continue to pursue reforms of the U.S. election laws “to verify the identity and eligibility of all voters and to ensure faith and confidence in all future elections,” and delivered a message to his supporters, saying “our incredible journey is only just beginning.”

Trump’s message came as Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called for him to be immediately removed from office as pressure mounted on Republicans to support invoking the 25th Amendment.

Sen. Schumer, House Speaker Pelosi call to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove President Trump from office immediately

On Thursday, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called for President Donald Trump to be immediately removed from office as pressure mounted on Republicans to support invoking the 25th Amendment.

Schumer said in a statement that the president “should not hold office one day longer,” adding, “The quickest and most effective way — it can be done today — to remove this president from office would be for [Vice President Mike Pence] to immediately invoke the 25th Amendment. If the Vice President and the Cabinet refuse to stand up, Congress should reconvene to impeach the president.” Pelosi joined Schumer’s call for invocation of the 25th Amendment, saying, “If the vice president and Cabinet do not act, the Congress may be prepared to move forward with impeachment. That is the overwhelming sentiment of my caucus.” Pelosi blamed Trump for inciting the violence which “will forever stain our nation’s history.”

Section 4 of the 25th Amendment has never been invoked.  It states the president can be removed from power if the vice president and a majority of Cabinet members find him “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.” Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday issued a joint statement calling on Pence and Trump’s Cabinet to invoke the amendment.

NY Mets to Acquire Francisco Lindor, Carlos Carrasco in trade with Cleveland

The New York Mets are finalizing a trade to acquire Cleveland shortstop Francisco Lindor and starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco, in exchange for young shortstops Andres Giménez and Ahmed Rosario as well as pitching prospect Josh Wolf and minor league outfielder Isaiah Greene.

Lindor has been the franchise’s top player since entering the majors in 2015. He is a four-time All-Star with three top-10 MVP finishes in his career. He posted a career-low .750 OPS last season but recorded 103 home runs and 329 runs scored from 2017-2019.

Cleveland will receive a pair of potential starting middle infielders along with the two prospects. Rosario tallied 177 hits in 157 games in 2019, leading MLB in triples. Giménez posted a .732 OPS in just 132 plate appearances last year, though he previously ranked No. 3 on the Mets’ prospect list.

Lawrence said in a video posted on social media, “My time here has been amazing, and I’ll be a Clemson Tiger forever… Looking back on it, I hope my legacy is that I was a great teammate and a great person overall, more than how I played. It’s how I treated people. I want that to be the main thing I’m known for. To all my teammates over the past three years, it’s been the most fun ride I’ve been on. I’ll look back on these last three years and have the best memories.”

The 21-year-old Lawrence help bring Clemson to a national championship as a freshman in 2018 and won his first 25 starts at the school before losing to LSU in last year’s College Football Playoff title game. Democrats take control of Senate with win in Georgia Senate runoffs

Democrats took control of the U.S. Senate on Wednesday after Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock were projected to win their runoff races in Georgia. CNN, NBC, ABC and The New York Times said both Democratic challengers will win the Tuesday election.

Ossoff had 50.28% of the vote to incumbent Sen. David Perdue’s 49.72, according to the Georgia secretary of state’s website. Warnock had 50.7% of the vote in the special Senate race to Sen. Kelly Loeffler’s 49.3%. With 100% of precincts reporting Wednesday afternoon, both Ossoff and Warnock had enough of a lead to avoid an automatic recount.

Warnock will become the first Black senator from Georgia. Ossoff declared victory, saying “I will look forward to serving you in the United States with integrity, with humility, with honor.”

The upper chamber will be divided 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans, but Vice President-elect Kamala Harris would break any tie votes in favor of the Democrats.
