Democratic Senators request investigation into Sens. Hawley and Cruz’s role in Capitol insurrection

Seven Democratic senators filed a complaint urging the Senate Ethics Committee to investigate GOP Sens. Ted Cruz’s and Josh Hawley’s efforts to overturn the presidential election results. The complaint comes more than two weeks after the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol led by supporters of former President Donald Trump.

Cruz and Hawley both raised formal objections during the joint session to confirm Electoral College results and voted against states’ election results after Congress reconvened following the attack.

Pittsburgh Steelers sign Washington QB Dwayne Haskins to one-year contract

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced Thurday that they have signed former Washington Football Team quarterback Dwayne Haskins to a one-year contract. Haskins was released by Washington on Dec. 28.

Haskins posted on Twitter, saying, “Three (3) in the Bible stands for restoration and eternal life,” Haskins said. “Let’s work.” Haskins, the former No. 15 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, finished 3–10 as a starter in two seasons in Washington. He opened the 2020 season as Washington’s starter but was demoted for quarterback Kyle Allen. Haskins was re-promoted later in the season and started two games, before being benched again in Week 16. He was stripped of his captainship and fined by Washington after a second COVID-19 violation. He appeared to have attended a party maskless and his $40,000 fine was the largest known for a player for a COVID-19 violation.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Philip Rivers announced that he will retire after 17 seasons in the NFL. The 39-year-old quarterback completed 68% of his throws for 4,169 yards, 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 16 starts this season, and led the Colts to an 11-5 record before losing to the Buffalo Bills in the first round of the playoffs.

President Trump pardons Steve Bannon and 141 others in final hours in office

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump granted clemency to dozens of people, including his former adviser Stephen Bannon and top election fundraiser Elliott Broidy.

In his final hours at the White House, Trump pardoned 73 people and commuted the prison sentences of 70 others in one of his final actions as president of the United States.

The White House said in a statement that Trump granted a full pardon to Bannon as prosecutors pursued “charges related to fraud stemming from his involvement in a political project,” adding, “Mr. Bannon has been an important leader in the conservative movement and is known for his political acumen.”

Bannon, a former senior White House adviser, was arrested and charged in August for allegedly defrauding donors of hundreds of thousands of dollars in connection to an online crowdfunding campaign known as “We Build the Wall” in 2018.

Trump had previously granted clemency in the months leading up to his final day in office to close aides, associates and friends including his former campaign adviser Roger Stone, his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his former foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos, among others.

President Trump wishes new administration luck in taped farewell address

President Donald Trump released a taped farewell address before leaving office, saying: “We did what we came to do – and so much more.” In a video posted on YouTube (which can be viewed here), he said he took on “the tough battles, the hardest fights… because that’s what you elected me to do”.

The last two weeks of Trump’s term have been dominated by the fallout from the deadly riot on Capitol Hill, when a mob of his supporters stormed Congress, seeking to overturn the election result. Trump said in his video, “Political violence is an attack on everything we cherish as Americans. It can never be tolerated.”

Also in his message, Trump said his administration built “the greatest economy in the history of the world.” He said, “Our agenda was not about right or left, it wasn’t about Republican or Democrat, but about the good of a nation, and that means the whole nation.”
